My Personal Declaration of Independence

My Personal Declaration of Independence

I don’t join things. I am not a member of anything. I follow no one.

I learn from the work of others freely, without worship or imitation. I put no one on a pedestal. Authority is earned in reality, not granted by titles, institutions, or crowds.

I am not a patriot. I make covenants, not pledges. I do not break covenants, but I owe nothing to those who break theirs.

My covenant with my country extends only as far as it behaves like the republic it claims to be. When it ceases to be that, the covenant dissolves on its side, not mine.

I understand what I don’t know. I understand what others don’t know.

There are no experts on God or on the absence of God. No one knows what consciousness is, nor the source from which it arises. No one knows what life is, even among those who know everything about living things. Because we do not know what life is, we cannot know whether life or death is “better.” No one knows the origin of life. Confidence is not knowledge. Volume is not truth.

Uncertainty is normal. Uncertainty is permanent. It is always folly to pretend otherwise.

I stand on what can be known, and I refuse to kneel before what cannot.

I reserve the right to think in straight lines, even when others prefer circles. I do not outsource my judgment to institutions, parties, tribes, or experts. I accept the cost of thinking for myself.

I speak plainly. I do not soften truth to gain approval or avoid disapproval. I do not lie to protect feelings, reputations, or illusions.

I act according to reality, not fashion. I do not participate in rituals of conformity. I do not pretend to believe what I do not believe.

I do not seek safety in numbers. I do not seek permission to live as a free human being. Fear is not a compass.

I am not defined by nation, class, race, party, or generation. I am not a mascot for anyone’s cause. I am responsible for my own life and no one else’s mythology.

I reject the fantasy that leaders know what they are doing. I reject the fantasy that systems are stable. I reject the fantasy that someone else is in charge of my fate.

I do not worship power. I do not envy it. I do not fear it. I recognize it for what it is: temporary, fragile, and dependent on belief.
